Webinar – Quantum Technologies

The Quantum Technologies Webinar, that will take place on April 26th at 3:30 pm MEZ (10:30 am BRT), is a cooperation between the Brasilien- und Lateinamerika-Zentrum of the University of Tübingen and the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin. The goal of this program is to bring together a Brazilian and a German researcher in order to shed light into the fascinating fields of quantum physics and quantum technologies.

The session also aims at discussing and exploring cooperation possibilities between institutions of the two countries. Both Brazil and Germany have been making strategic investments in quantum technologies, which is bound to revolutionize areas such as computing, cryptography and metrology. The webinar will be shared between Prof. Dr. Daniel Braun, from the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Tübingen, and Prof. Dr. Rafael Chaves from the International Institute of Physics (IIP-UFRN, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte), in Brazil.

About the lectures:
Quantum metrology – the art of measuring (Prof. Dr. Daniel Braun)
Quantum metrology is one of the three pillars of the ongoing quantum revolution 2.0, alongside with quantum computation and quantum communication.  Its central goal is to improve the measurement of physical quantities (e.g. magnetic fields, temperature, or weak gravitational signals) by using quantum mechanical effects such as quantum interference, quantum entanglement, or the detection of single quanta. It is already now feeding back into many areas of science and technology, such as astronomy, archeology, or imaging, with corresponding large stakes in future high-tech industry.

The talk will give a brief introduction to quantum mechanics in general and then show at the hand of a few examples what kind of improvements can be achieved by systematically exploiting quantum effects for metrology.

What is quantum computing? (Prof. Dr. Rafael Chaves)
Quantum computing is a rapidly evolving field that has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach and solve a variety of problems. In this introductory and short talk, we will explore the feats, features and failures of quantum computers, narrating a bit of their history, main algorithms and applications, also discussing the challenges and prospects for the near future.
